The Ordinary Means of Grace

Join us as we begin a new sermon series exploring The Ordinary Means of Grace—the simple yet profound ways God nourishes and sustains His people.

By “means of grace,” we mean the resources God has graciously placed at our disposal through which He communicates His mercy and compassion to His people. By calling them ordinary, we acknowledge that these means often appear unimpressive, even foolish, to the watching world.

From the very beginning of the biblical storyline—before, but especially immediately after the fall of Adam and Eve—Scripture reveals a consistent and sobering truth: humanity is in desperate need of grace. Our hearts are deeply damaged and corrupted by sin, and even after conversion, the lingering effects of sin remain. For that reason, our need for grace is not occasional. We do not need grace yearly, semiannually, quarterly, or even monthly. We need grace every single day.

In His mercy, God has provided specific means—ordinary yet powerful—by which He regularly communicates that grace. In this series, we will focus on four primary means:

• God’s Word
• The Lord’s Supper
• Baptism
• Prayer
