Cuando se resumi\u00f3 teol\u00f3gicamente, la doctrina se expres\u00f3 como justificaci\u00f3n s\u00f3lo por la fe, el art\u00edculo por el cual la iglesia se mantiene o cae, seg\u00fan Mart\u00edn Lutero. Los reformadores llamaron a la justificaci\u00f3n por la fe el principio material del cristianismo, porque involucra la materia o sustancia misma de lo que una persona debe entender y creer para ser salva. La justificaci\u00f3n es una declaraci\u00f3n de Dios basada en la obra de Cristo. Fluye de la gracia de Dios y llega al individuo no por cualquier cosa que \u00e9l o ella pueda hacer, sino por \u201cs\u00f3lo fe\u201d (sola fide).
